Scott A. Barnhill Achieves Life Time Status in ASCE and Became a Board Certified Geotechnical Engineer in the Academy of Geoprofessionals

Scott Barnhill with over 40 years experience in geotechnical and environmental engineering has recently attained life time status in the American Society of Civil Engineers and became a Board Certified Geotechnical Engineer in the Academy of Geoprofessionals. Mr. Barnhill has held key technical and managerial positions in the areas of environmental and geotechnical engineering. He was an adjunct professor of engineering at Old Dominion University teaching foundation engineering for 11 years. He has been involved in over 6000 projects nationally and overseas, but predominantly located on the east coast from Maine to Florida. Projects have included DOD projects, such as the Pentagon Basement Renovation, commercial buildings, large industrial and waterfront facilities, coal terminals, landfills, roadways, bridges, slope stability, underwater slopes, bulkhead design, underwater retaining walls, foundations, soft soil response, ground reinforcement, and ground improvement.

Constitutive Model Input Parameters for Numerical Analyses of Geotechnical Problems: An In-Situ Testing Case Study

Crystal Cox has written a new paper called "Constitutive Model Input Parameters for Numerical Analyses of Geotechnical Problems: An In-Situ Testing Case Study" to be published in Proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials in Buenos Aires. Numerical modeling and finite element analyses are increasingly becoming cost effective methods for assessing geotechnical problems. The use of in-situ testing methods, notably the SDMT, along with stiffness reduction approaches utilizing G-γ curves are used to obtain stiffness related input parameters for numerical modeling. This paper presents the steps used to obtain stiffness parameters based on shear wave velocity measurements taken from SCPTu and DMT data and presents a case study of a monitored embankment.
