Lesner Bridge Replacement Virginia Beach, VA
The new bridge will be a precast concrete segmental trapezoidal box girder bridge with 9 flared piers and 2 abutment structures. The segments will be post-tensioned. The abutments will be standard stub abutments. The piers and abutments will be supported on 48 inch drilled shafts. The total length of the replacement structure would be 1,575 feet, not including roadway approaches. Typical spans would be 150 feet in length, with a 225 foot main span crossing the navigational channel. The vertical navigational clearance under the existing bridge is about 35 feet above the mean high water. This will be extended to 45 feet under the new bridge. As proposed, the replacement structure would accommodate 2 lanes of traffic in each direction, with shoulders on each side and a sidewalk. The roadway could accommodate 3 lanes of traffic in each direction in the future, if needed. Most of the proposed bridge replacement can be built within existing right of way which would accommodate two (2) 53’8" bridges (eastbound and westbound). Each bridge section includes two 12-foot wide travel lanes, 10-foot outside and 6 foot inside shoulders, and a 10-foot multi-use path. Construction will performed in stages so that 4 lanes of traffic will be maintained at all times. The north side stage will be built first.
